“Fibermaxxing” spent the year climbing search trends, and for once the viral version of a nutrition idea points in a defensible direction. Fiber does not burn fat, and no food “costs” more calories to digest than it provides. What it does is make a deficit easier to sustain, through three concrete mechanisms:
- Volume per calorie. A 300-calorie bowl of vegetables, beans, and lean protein physically fills the stomach in a way a 300-calorie pastry does not.
- Slower gastric emptying. Soluble fiber extends the period between eating and feeling hungry again.
